sucujovide.wordpress.com
The city's Planning Advisory Board voted 8-0 this week to rejecr the proposed master plan thatFort Lauderdale-base consultant put together. The project has the potential to create construction jobs as a result of severaol buildings planned forthe site, including 11 garagesd and several sports facilities tied to baseballp and tennis. But the boarfd and the city don’t see eye to eye. The planningy board passed a motioh to communicate to the city commissiojn that the master plan does not reflect public which focused on passive uses such ashikintg trails.
The commission, which has the finakl word, is to review the master plan next The Advisory Board also asked commissioners to directt staff to take more time and revamo the master plan so that it more closelyt aligns withthe public's focus on passivs uses. "Nobody is denying theree was apublic process,” said boarfd Chairwoman Janice Tarbert. “You didn’t listen to the residents.” EDSA principal Paul D. Kissinger, who is overseeing the Virginia Key and city officials said both partiezs worked to preservethe park’s natural beauty and expand its drawingg potential by adding baseball tennis courts and other uses.
More than 30 memberds of the public, many of whom had participated in past maste rplan workshops, spoke out agains t the plan. Many cited concerns over the city'sz lack of focus on preserving current passiv uses around the MiamiMarined Stadium. As the Business Journal reporteslast year, the city'xs stated goal, through the mastee plan, is to make the waterfront and the land more accessiblde and user-friendly. But, multiple ownership and leasesw arelimiting factors. But the proposals have prompted some concernxs from conservationistsand preservationists.
Some have raised concern s aboutproposed dorms, ball fields, restaurant space, garages and other non-natural uses of the 1,000-acre key. The city had proposede transforming a landfill into ball fieldse and otherathletic uses, whichh would be the basis for a regional park. Additional possibilitied include mountain bike trails anda world-class facility for enthusiastss of bicycle motocross, or BMX, which was included in Olympic competitionh for the first time this year. The city also discussed increasinyg both its wet slip and dry staci opportunities onVirginia Key. Currently, it has 2,550 slips and 2,300 racks.
